LEMU reaffirms its commitment on land issues in Kumam land

Land and Equity Movement in Uganda (LEMU) has reinstated its engagement with the Kumam cultural heritage aimed at addressing critical land issues in the Kumam land.
This was confirmed by Dr. Theresa Auma O. Eilu Executive Director LEMU while addressing the chiefdom ministers and other stakeholders on Monday 2nd Feb 2026 during a review meeting of Kumam principles, practices, and responsibilities (PPRR) book for customary land tenure management.
She noted that in 2008, LEMU worked with Kumam elder’s forum to document the customary land rules, and now that Kumam got its chiefdom, it was important to re-engage in order to revise the documented rules.
Dr. Auma who spoke from Soroti district Lukiiko hall, urged the community to embrace the mediation strategy to handle the rising cases of land disputes, adding that they are focusing on the protection of customary land tenure.

Peter Ekilu, the deputy prime minster II of the Kumam cultural heritage, praised LEMU for the close collaboration with Kumam chiefdom on matters of land rights.
Moses Elilu Program Manager Redeem International Redeem, a nonprofit organization that works to protect widows and orphans from violence, exploitation, and land grabbing, called for trust between the leaders and the community on land matters.
