Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma to succeed late Oyo
Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi has been named the new King of Tooro Kingdom.
This follows the death of King Oyo, who ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three and ruled for more than 30 years.
The selection of Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi who is is a member of the Tooro royal family, comes as the kingdom continues preparations to lay King Oyo to rest on saturday 12th September 2026.
He now becomes the next Omukama of Tooro, according to the succession decision announced following consultations within the royal establishment.
King Oyo, who was 34, died in the United States on August 27 after a period of illness.
His death triggered a succession process within the royal family, with several members of the Babiito clan understood to have been considered for the throne.
Who is Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma?
Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma comes from one of the branches of the Tooro royal family descended from former Omukama George Edward Rukidi.
Historical records cited by Ugandan media identify Edward as the heir of Paul Kijanangoma, the eldest son of the late Sir George Rukidi, a former King of Tooro.
Edward is also connected to the Kijanangoma family, which has played a prominent and sometimes controversial role in Tooro’s royal politics.
In 2012, Edward convened a meeting involving members of his family, including David Kijanangoma, Patrick Kwezi, Grace Ochola, Christopher Kijanangoma and Damalie Komunkyera, according to a 2016 New Vision report reproduced by Matooke Republic.
The meeting was connected to reconciliation efforts surrounding the long-running case involving former Tooro Prime Minister John Sanyu Katuramu.
Edward’s brother David Kijanangoma became one of the most outspoken critics of King Oyo’s administration.
